Release Date & Platforms

The Lost Wild is scheduled to launch in 2027. Great Ape Games and Annapurna Interactive confirmed the release window during PlayStation State of Play in June 2026, ending years of silence since the game was first revealed in July 2022.

The game will be available on PlayStation 5 and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. There is no confirmed release date beyond the 2027 window, and no pre-order details have been announced yet.

Because the title is not yet released, all gameplay information on this wiki comes from official trailers, developer blogs, and hands-on previews from Summer Game Fest 2026. We update this section when new official announcements arrive.

Overview

The Lost Wild is a first-person survival horror game developed by Great Ape Games and published by Annapurna Interactive. You play as Saskia, who wakes on a mysterious island overrun by prehistoric predators and must explore abandoned research facilities while staying alive.

Unlike many dinosaur games, this is not a power fantasy shooter. Director Gary Napper — who worked on Alien: Isolation — designed the experience around observation, instinct, and restraint. Dinosaurs behave as wild animals with systemic AI, not scripted boss encounters with weak points.

The game draws influences from Resident Evil, Dino Crisis, Alien: Isolation, Trespasser, Half-Life, and Firewatch. Expect slow-burn tension, environmental storytelling with minimal HUD, and cat-and-mouse encounters where running is sometimes your only option.

Controls

Official control bindings have not been published yet. Steam lists the game as unreleased, and neither Great Ape Games nor Annapurna has shared a final PC or PlayStation control scheme.

Based on preview demos and the survival horror genre, expect standard first-person movement (walk, crouch, interact, inventory) plus tools for stealth and distraction. The Summer Game Fest 2026 demo emphasized careful movement speed, flashlight use, throwing objects, and environmental interaction rather than combat inputs.

Gameplay & Stealth Guide

Survival in The Lost Wild depends on studying dinosaur behavior before you move. Game director Gary Napper describes three pillars: observation, instinct, and restraint. The player is vulnerable by design — you evade, hide, distract, and escape rather than fight to kill.

Preview footage from Polygon, Game Informer, and Seasoned Gaming consistently highlights the same loop: move quietly through dense environments, manage light and sound, learn individual predator patterns, and use the environment when detected.

Core stealth principles (from official previews)

  • Move slowly in foliage — running creates noise that predators can hear
  • Limit flashlight use — light can reveal your position to nearby carnivores
  • Flares and noise can alert animals; use distractions deliberately, not randomly
  • Learn each dinosaur's reactions — some may lose interest if you stay still
  • Use throwable objects (e.g., mugs, car alarms) to create brief escape windows
  • Saving is a limited resource and you are not safe during save animations
  • Explore alternate routes — the demo showed branching pathing toward objectives
  • Deeper exploration increases danger — risk versus reward for scavenging

Note: These tips reflect pre-release demo behavior. Final balance and mechanics may change before launch.

Dinosaurs & AI Behavior

Great Ape Games emphasizes dinosaurs as intelligent wild animals, not arcade monsters. Creatures use reactive systemic AI — they investigate sound, respond to light, hunt in packs in some cases, and act as apex ambush predators rather than following fixed patrol loops.

The Allosaurus is the most documented species from public demos. It stalks Saskia through moonlit forests and facility exteriors, reacts to player noise and flashlight, circles structures, and can kill the player mid-action including during saves.

Developers have stated multiple dinosaur species will appear, with different behaviors. Night encounters and group hunting were shown in early teasers. A full bestiary will be added after launch as more species are officially confirmed.

Known Allosaurus behaviors (demo)

  • Ambush predator — reacts to player movement and sound, not fixed routes
  • Investigates disturbances and may circle buildings blocking exits
  • Responds to flashlight exposure and flare ignition
  • Can sniff out hidden players — hiding under vehicles worked in demo but was not guaranteed
  • Capable of killing NPCs and the player with brutal finishers

Tier List

A traditional meta tier list is not possible before launch — there is no playable public build, ranked modes, or confirmed full roster. Instead, this pre-release tier list ranks documented threat level from preview footage and developer statements.

We will replace this framework with a complete tier list after release when players can compare dinosaurs, tools, and encounter difficulty across the full campaign.

Tier Creature Notes
S Allosaurus Primary demo predator; apex ambush hunter with strong sensory response to sound and light. Highest confirmed threat.
A Pack hunters (unconfirmed species) Early teasers showed group behavior at night. Species names TBA — treat as high threat when officially revealed.
B Unconfirmed carnivores Developers promise multiple species with distinct behaviors. Placeholder until official reveals.
C Herbivores / ambient wildlife Not shown in detail in public demos. May still create noise or environmental hazards — TBA at launch.

Note: Threat tiers are editorial estimates for pre-launch planning only, not official game data.

Items & Tools

The Lost Wild focuses on non-lethal tools and scavenged resources. You are generally not equipped to kill dinosaurs, though defensive items may temporarily repel or intimidate them. Items appear through environmental scavenging in facilities and wilderness.

The following items are confirmed or strongly shown in public demos and official descriptions. Many more items likely exist but remain unannounced.

Item Type Description
Flashlight Tool Essential for dark forest navigation; overuse risks alerting predators to your position.
Flares Distraction Can draw dinosaur attention; igniting them may expose your location if used carelessly.
Throwable objects (e.g., mug) Distraction Thrown at surfaces or vehicles to create noise — demo used a mug to trigger a car alarm.
Keycard Progression Used to access gated facility areas; demo involved searching structures for card access.
Save consumable (limited) System Resident Evil-style limited saves; saving is not safe — predators can attack mid-animation.
Makeshift deterrents Defense Official materials mention non-lethal weapons and fire combined to briefly scare predators.

Map & Locations

No official map has been released. The game takes place on a single mysterious island combining dense prehistoric wilderness with abandoned research installations woven into the environment.

Preview content establishes several location types players can expect. We will publish a detailed map section after launch or when official map materials become available.

Location Description
Moonlit forest Opening demo area — thick foliage, minimal HUD, first Allosaurus encounter after a car crash opening.
Facility exteriors Overgrown buildings and gates; keycard access and hazmat-suited NPC encounters shown.
Research laboratories Interior lab spaces reached late in the demo; mysterious radio voice provides guidance.
Abandoned infrastructure Discarded ID passes, notebooks, and meals suggest environmental storytelling throughout.
Island interior (TBA) Developers tease deeper exploration with escalating danger and sci-fi undertones.

Story & Lore

You play as Saskia, an investigative reporter who wakes after a car accident on an island filled with dinosaurs. She must uncover why the research facilities were abandoned and what role she plays in the island's history.

Storytelling is environmental and observational. Gary Napper stated the narrative unfolds through exploration, interaction, and discovery rather than heavy cutscenes or intrusive UI. A mysterious voice on the radio guides Saskia toward answers.

Preview materials reference notebooks, ID passes, hastily abandoned meals, and hazmat personnel — suggesting a scientific catastrophe. The Summer Game Fest 2026 demo ended with an anomalous explosion and sci-fi hints, implying layers beyond pure prehistoric horror.

Story themes confirmed by developers

  • Personal, grounded narrative — not a blockbuster power fantasy
  • Mystery of the abandoned island and research program
  • Saskia's identity and connection to events revealed through exploration
  • Horror rooted in awe and respect for dinosaurs as animals
  • Sci-fi elements teased but not fully explained pre-launch

Codes

There are no official redeem codes, promo codes, or cheat codes for The Lost Wild. The game has not been released on Steam, PlayStation, or any platform as of June 2026.

Websites claiming to offer trainers, infinite health cheats, or download codes for The Lost Wild are misleading. Many reuse generic trainer templates for unreleased games and may distribute malware. Do not download unauthorized tools.

When Annapurna or Great Ape Games announces legitimate promotional codes (for example, Steam wishlist campaigns or launch events), we will list them here with source links. Until then, treat any "code" site as a scam.
